Margate has been traditionally the seaside resort for Londoners who travelled down the Thames to the beaches on the Isle of Thanet. The separation between the island and mainland has over the centuries been reduced and the silt deposits have all but attached the isle to the mainland. Margate is historically known as the first place to perform donkey rides on the beach and is the home of the oldest wooden roller coaster known as the Scenic Railway. The Shell Grotto is considered the only underground shell temple with passageways lined with mosaics of shells and connected to the nearby Margate Caves.
