The name of Hastings is probably best known for the famous 1066 battle and so it is no surprise that the town holds the remains of William the Conqueror's first castle. It is also the town with the country's steepest funicular railway, a large fishing port with the biggest beach originated fishing fleet and somewhat faded seaside resort. The castle remains of the wooden prefabricated structure tell the story of the great battle. Nearby the caves of St Clements have in part been converted to recount the story of the town's days as a smugglers' haven. These stand on the hill that divides the old town from the less interesting new part and can be reached by the two funicular railways.
